He earned degrees in physics and mathematics at the University of Wyoming. Nelson grew up in Laramie, Wyoming, where he enjoyed climbing mountains and began a lifelong love of nature. Students and faculty alike benefited from his curiosity, creativity, and wealth of knowledge on every subject imaginable. “He cared deeply about his students, the department, and the University, and has touched the lives of so many generations of our undergraduate and graduate students. “Randal was a dear colleague and friend,” says Sandhya Dwarkadas, the Albert Arendt Hopeman Professor and Chair of Computer Science. Nelson’s death is “a huge loss, not just to the computer science department but to our entire community,” says Wendi Heinzelman, dean of the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences. Randal Nelson (University of Rochester photo) “And we were all so improved as makers as a result.” ‘Relentless at solving real problems’ “He was definitely one of the most dependably down-to-earth engineers that I ever met,” Copeland adds. “There were plenty of faculty who would throw praise on students, but when Randal Nelson did it, you knew that person had done something extraordinary,” Sinko says. The start-up eventually had a four-year run as Hardlight VR, selling virtual reality full-body suits. “Randal Nelson was the best advisor and mentor a student or engineer could hope for,” says Sinko who, with Copeland and other students, cofounded Haptech. Though recently diagnosed with cancer, Nelson was undergoing treatment and seemed to be doing well. They were stunned and saddened to hear that Nelson died unexpectedly while taking a walk in his Rochester neighborhood in April. The Robotics Club Nelson helped organize and guide, the robot construction class he taught, and the makers space he created and filled with tools in the Computer Studies Building, became havens for project-driven students like Morgan Sinko ’16 and Lucian Copeland ’16 who thrive on translating ingenuity into workable prototypes. The year before, it was the Blob-bot, a robotic amoeba “consisting of a flexible icosahedral shell animated by 30 linear actuators co-incident with the polyhedral edges.” Last year, it was the Skatebot-a robot that could skate on both wheels and blades. You could always count on Randal Nelson’s students to bring something intriguing to Senior Design Day at the University of Rochester. Eventually during the fight, Type J will shut down and it is left at the Solitaria Penitentiary.Randal Nelson is being remembered as a curious and creative engineer who was deeply invested in advising, mentoring, and supervising Rochester students. If Nina or Enrique come in contact with Type J, it will hurt them. Enrique suggests that they be partners, but Nina refuses and fight him along with Type J. Nina confronts Enrique, but he warns her by saying she should worry about Type J instead. Enrique is knocked out of the room and Lukas runs away to safety. Alan and Nina goes to rescue Lukas from Enrique, but they couldn't get to Enrique's location until Type J comes back and smashes through the doors. After Nina defeats Type J, it is hit with a huge blast of the radiation that almost destroys it. Later, Alan Smithee shows up and activates a radiation device that weakens Type J on one side of the room. Nina successfully guides Lukas through the tunnels to escape from Type J, but it attacks Nina after. Anna apparently flees and Lukas becomes Type J's new target. Anna earlier knocked Lukas through the bridge, but he luckily got caught in ropes. Anna falls on Lukas Hayes and they eventually fall on sandbags. He jumps down onto the bridge and falls through it bringing Anna down.

Type J is next seen watching Nina Williams and Anna Williams fight on an old bridge. Lukas manages to escape, but only to be ambushed by Enrique Ortega and a bunch of armed men. Type J chases Lukas Hayes in the opening movie it is not seen but can be heard running, roaring, and watching Lukas from its tracking system. It is named "Type J" because the letter "J" is inscribed on its abdomen.

Type J is encountered at the Solitaria Penitentiary. Type J is a robot that was created by Doctor Boskonovitch and taken by Lukas Hayes as a part of his revenge against the people that shut him down. Type J is a robotic antagonist in Death by Degrees.
